KP Weekly Newsletter: Home theatre PC’s, SSD hard drives, and console repairs

Post Image

Home theatre PC’s, SSD hard drives, and console repairs.

We like to give you some techy things to think about each week, so this week we’ll talk about home theatre PC’s, the benefits of SSD hard drives, and some information on the various console repairs we perform all the time.

Home theatre PC’s

By now most homes have a flat screen TV with HDMI and often some poorly integrated ‘smart TV’ features. Let’s talk about a better way to make your TV ‘smart’.

A PC connected to your TV?!
That sounds unappealing, right? Who wants a massive computer base unit whirring away whilst connected to their TV? Keyboard and mouse trailing across the room? Well, it’s actually possible nowadays to have a really elegant minimalist and very fast setup that gives you excellent flexibility.

Let’s face it, smart TV’s are generally slow, unfamiliar, and clunky. They lack apps, and often the apps that are on your smart TV become out of date and don’t even work any more. What could be more familiar than Microsoft Windows, and all the services you use already on a computer available on your TV. You might have heard of Amazon Fire TV, or Apple TV, but neither of them support all of the video services we love. For instance, Amazon Prime video isn’t available on Apple TV, and Apple content isn’t available on Amazon Fire TV. YouTube is clunky and not easy to use on either device, and neither of them allow downloading content such as movies, and they both do not support each others music streaming services. With a computer, you can do all of these things and use every video and music streaming service rather than be limited by what the smart TV or device allows. You can check your emails, Facebook, share moments with family and friends, catch up on football, read news and stream music right from your sofa.

What do you need?
Of course this can be done with a regular computer or laptop with HDMI port connected to your TV, but we want something that is very small, not noticeable, is absolutely silent, and can be left on all the time. For this we recommend the Intel NUC series of computers. These are super fast tiny little computers, a little bigger than a hockey puck.Get a good quality small wireless keyboard with long lasting batteries (such as the Logitech K400, which, incidentally we sell!), and you’ll forget the computer is even there. You’ll need a HDMI cable, which will also transfer sound from the computer to the TV. Now you can enjoy all your favourite content in a familiar package and no restrictions.

Sound like something you’d like to setup?
Give our shop a call on 01424 400160 and we can guide you through the parts you need, costing, installation and hassle free setup. We build lots of home theatre computers and customers are always so pleased with the results.

SSD hard drives

Talking about home theatres PC’s made us realise that not everyone knows the benefits of SSD (solid state drive) hard drives, some of which are not obvious to consumers.

Speeeeeed!
First of all, SSD hard drives are immensely faster than regular hard drives. Many SSD drives are in the order of 10-20x faster than a regular hard drive!

Cheapest performance upgrade
On a budget but want a bit more speed out of your PC. Change the hard drive to an SSD drive, it’s one of the cheapest upgrades that will give you the biggest boost in performance.

Durability
Regular hard drives are mechanical, featuring moving parts. Drop your laptop or knock your PC over and you could find your data is gone forever due to psychical damage to the mechanics of the hard drive. With SSD drives, there are no moving parts, so they cope much better with impacts such as being dropped or knocked.

Failing in a good way
If an SSD drive is unlucky enough to go wrong, they often fail in a good way. Rather than completely being unable to read the data which is often the case with a failed regular mechanical hard drive, SSD’s tend to fail in a ‘read only’ manner, meaning you can still read the data on the drive but cannot write anything new to it. This means you can often still get your data in a disaster situation and just copy it to a new hard drive. This seems like a good time to remind you that we offer data recovery as one of our services by the way! 01424 400160 if you need help.

Noise
No moving parts, no noise!

Heat
You might not have known that the hard drive inside your computer or laptop generates heat. SSD drives generate a lot less heat.

Energy efficient
SSD hard drives use less power, so are more energy efficient!

Magnetism
Lastly, SSD drives are not affected by magnetism. Ever remember being told never to leave anything magnetic near a computer? Well, SSD drives are not affected by this as the data is not stored via magnetism.

So, ask for an SSD drive the next time you buy a computer! Want to upgrade your existing machine and enjoy these benefits? Give us a call on 01424 400160.

Console Repairs

As always, we like to remind you of services we offer that you might not have realised. This week it’s console repairs. Got a console that’s not working? Give us a call! Repairs start at just £40, call 01424 400160 for a quote.

KP Weekly Newsletter: Perfect Passwords, Wireless Nodes, and Screen Repairs

Post Image

This week we would like to talk about best practices for passwords, how wireless nodes can cover your building with wireless better than several access points, and some information about the screen repairs we do on a daily basis.

Perfect Passwords

We should all have super secure complex passwords, but it’s a nightmare to remember long complicated passwords, right? Well, it doesn’t have to be. Let us show you how…
Start using strong passwords
So many people use really simple passwords, and this can lead to being hacked quite easily. Everyone should be using passwords of at least 12 characters nowadays, with mixed case, and at least one unusual character such as the & symbol or dollar sign. You should also stop using the same password for multiple websites. If you get hacked, you can be sure that the hacker will try your password on every other major website. Don’t be fooled into thinking “why would someone hack me, I have nothing of interest”. The hacks are executed by “bots” (computer programs) that trawl the Internet trying passwords for every email address they discover along the way. Once they’re in, they will try the same email address, username, and password combinations on every other big name website. You can stop them at the front door by having a strong password and not repeating it across multiple sites.Manage your passwords better
Ok, so you want to setup really secure long passwords. How are you going to keep track of all this and remember these wonderful new super safe complex passwords. Well, it’s actually quite easy. Use a password manager! We recommend LastPass available at www.lastpass.com. With LastPass you can automatically create new strong passwords for websites you use, store them, and synchronise them across any browser or operating system which is all handled by a secure encrypted password vault. Once you have stored your passwords, you can login to your websites instantly without having to remember every complex password for every website – just your LastPass master password. You can even secure your master password against your mobile phone so that your mobile phone is required in order to authorise any logins to various websites. Once you’re setup, authorising a login from your phone is as simple as pressing ‘verify’ on the phone screen. Now you are much better protected, and securely logging into websites is easier than ever!Give it a try at www.lastpass.com

Wireless Nodes

Struggling with wireless coverage for your building? Tried range extenders and realised they aren’t performing? Let us setup your wireless network using wireless nodes and enjoy excellent coverage!
What’s the difference?
The way most people improve wireless coverage is to install extra access points with separate wireless names, or purchase ‘range extenders’ that can often be unreliable and vastly reduce the speed of the wireless network. With our wireless nodes solution, we can setup one single wireless network and strategically place nodes in areas where wireless coverage is most desired. This means you can roam the building operating on the same wireless network, switching from node to node seamlessly without even noticing. Adding more coverage is as simple as plugging in another node where required, no configuration needed! This solution provides a noticeable difference and is probably less expensive than you might think! We have rolled out this solution in homes, offices, restaurants, hotels, holiday parks, and public areas. Give us a call to find out more or book an appointment. 01424 400150.

Screen Repairs

Lastly, we always like to remind you of services we offer that you might not have realised. This week it’s screen repairs. Cracked your iPhone screen, broken your laptop screen, dropped your iPad, Samsung phone, tablet, or any other type of screen – give us a call! Repairs start at just £30, call 01424 400160 for a quote.

KP Weekly Newsletter: Crypto Virus Protection, Backups, and Micro Repairs

In this edition of our newsletter, we’ll talk about recent increases in ransomware virus attacks and what you can do to protect yourself, best practices for your data backups, and some information about the microscopic component repairs that we do on a daily basis.

Crypto Virus Protection

Because of their effectiveness, crypto virus attacks are on the rise. Fortunately there are a few things you can do to protect yourself.

Firstly, understanding the severity of crypto virus attacks and the impact it could have on your personal or business computers is important. If you fall victim to one of these attacks, you can find that your data is inaccessible with the only resolution being to pay the ransom which will often be in a currency called ‘bitcoin’, and the ransom is often quite large, sometimes thousands of pounds, counting on the fact that with no other means of recovering the data, victims are likely to pay almost anything.

With that in mind, we would like to recommend a few things that you can do to help mitigate such damaging losses.

Make sure you have good antivirus. Although this goes without saying, we see so many systems just running the built in ‘windows defender’ and nothing else. There are lots of free antivirus packages available, most of which offer email scanning also. We recommend Avast (www.avast.com) for good antivirus protection that won’t slow your system down.

Don’t open every attachment or web link you receive in an email. Received an email with an attachment or a web link from a source you didn’t immediately recognise or wasn’t expecting? Do not reply to it, do not open it! Remember you can create a new email (not a reply email) to that person and ask them to verify that they sent you the email. Email ‘spoofing’ is on the rise, it is very easy to ‘spoof’ an email so that it appears to have come from someone in your contact list. If you wasn’t expecting an attachment from someone, just don’t open it. One click can lead to disaster. Was that email really so urgent and important that you didn’t have time to check the source?

Be careful what you install. A lot of websites such as online gaming, video streaming, and download websites will offer to install toolbar’s, and a lot of software will offer ‘extras’ with most users just clicking next all the way through the install process. Don’t click yes to everything that pops up on a website you’re trying to access, and be mindful of any free software you’re installing – they often contain ‘extras’ that you are agreeing to install by default. Don’t click ‘next’ all the way through without looking at what default options are enabled. If you are a business customer, you can speak to us first before installing anything and we can advise immediately if it is safe.

Backup, Backup, Backup. You can never have too many backups! Install some backup software, buy a USB hard drive (we sell those too!), and start backing up today. You won’t regret spending a little money and acting on that advice at a later date! To help you get started, here is our recommendation for some free backup software to help make backing up easier! Cobian Backup, available at www.cobiansoft.com. Backup periodically, as often as you can. Crypto virus and ransomware attacks will often target your backups also, it’s no good backing data to a folder on your computer or another hard drive permanently plugged into your machine. Keep your backups on external media that you can unplug after each backup and store safely somewhere. If you are a business owner with servers, you should also be backing up to a secure off-site facility as well (yes, we offer that too!) with ‘versioning’ history (meaning you can roll back to a historical copy of any individual file). If you aren’t already doing this, you should give us a call so we can help set this up for you as soon as possible.

These simple little snippets of advice will help protect you, but if you do end up with a crypto or ransom virus, you are welcome to visit our shop on Bohemia Road to see what else we can do for you.
